The 'Up North' MarketplaceTM is a premier event designed to showcase the unique and outstanding work of northern Minnesota's forest-based artists and producers. Since its inception in 2003, the Marketplace has drawn more than 20,000 visitors.

Demonstrations at the Markeplace

The ‘Up North’ Marketplace brings artists and craftspeople from around Minnesota and the world to demonstrate and share their outstanding ideas, designs, and crafts.

Watch for ongoing demonstrations throughout the weekend by region’s premier artists and artisans. Be sure to pick up the Showguide at the Marketplace for detailed schedules.

Phillip Odden (www.norskwoodworks.com) - Norwegian Woodcarving/Furniture Making
Designing and creating architectural wood carvings and furniture since 1979 in the classic style of Rococo, Baroque, and Norwegian dragon style. He is trained in the old world carving styles of Norway and will be doing demonstrations during the marketplace. His commissioned works in the Public Domain include: Norwegian Pavillon at Walt Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando, FL, Gol Stave Church Reproduction in Minot, ND and the Norwegian American Museum in Decorah, Iowa.

Per Helldorff (www.bilderikvadrat.se) - Swedish Woodcarving
Per Heldorff hails from the acclaimed Swedish craft school, Saterglantan, a college of handicrafts located in the Dalarna region of Sweden. Per is a technical and artistic wood carving instructor at this premier craft school.   A master carver for many years, Per mixes mechanics, master carving and visual poetry.  His idols are Leonardo DaVinci,  Christopher Polhem, and Gubben Pettson.   Through his work Per merges the traditions of functional wooden gears and cogs with expressions of Swedish folk art. 

Glenna Olson, Studio 1201 - Woodcuts and the Printing Process
Glenna Olson is an artist and educator living in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She is a graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, MN and teaches high school art with Hibbing Public Schools. Advanced study opportunities with numerous artists have enhanced Glenna’s skills in drawing, watercolor, graphic arts and varied book arts processes. Glenna carves and prints images off of wood or linoleum blocks. She was featured in a solo exhibit, entitled, “Printrospective,” at the Myles Reif Performing Arts Center in Grand Rapids in February thru March of 2006. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions as well as two four-person shows at the MacRostie Art Center: “UNLEASHED” in January of 1996, and the “MacRostie Staff Exhibit” in 1999.

J.W. Beltman Woodworking - Windsor Chair Making
Quality, long-lasting Windsor chairs, stools and settees made with meticulous attention to detail, using traditional tools and techniques. John Beltman also teaches traditional woodworking at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minn.  He will be demonstrating these techniques Sunday, September 21st at the marketplace.

Grant Goltz of Squeedunk Rustic Furniture, Kayaks, Canoes & Guitars - Guitar Making
Grant creates rustic furniture, birch-bark canoes, wood/epoxy kayaks, and G&M guitars. Every hand-made Squeedunk product is unique and is inspired by the grand canoes of the fur trade era.  His 27-foot Boreal Confluence canoe, constructed for a French expedition to Hudson's Bay is a piece of useable art in and of itself. It also inspires his main furniture line. Grant will be demonstrating guitar making during the marketplace on Saturday and Sunday.

Music by Sam Militich
Sam Miltich grew up in norhern Minnesota in a musical family. Gatherings in the Miltich home bring family and friends together to play music and sing. Sam has played music from a young age starting on the piano, learning to read and write music, then playing bass and tuba for his school's band. At age 14, Sam began to study the guitar seriously. Exposed to many styles of music, some of Sam's musical influences include: Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Andres Segovia, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Maurice Ravel, Stevie Wonder, Stochelo Rosenberg, and Bireli Lagrene. Sam is a lover of all musical styles from jazz, to rock, to classical, to tamburitzan, to Brazilian bossa nova. At age 15, Sam heard Django Reinhardt's music in Woody Allen's "Sweet and Lowdown" and knew he would dedicate his life to the music of Django Reinhardt and the art of the gypsy jazz guitar. Sam has played throughout the country as well as Holland, Germany, and Japan. He toured with David Grisman and the Stephane Wremble Trio in 2006 on Amoeba Music's "Gypsy Caravan." Sam played at the Lincoln Center in New York City as a member of the Robin Nolan Trio at a concert honoring Django with international musicians. Sam has also toured with Paul Mehling's Hot Club of San Francisco. Sam has shared the stage and bill with such great artists as the Ferre' Brothers, Angelo DeBarre, Dorado Schmitt, Fapy Lafertin, Ludovic Beier, Samson Schmitt, and Ken Pepolowsk

Demonstration by Bigfork Valley Log Homes, featuring Nate Rajala of New Day Construction. See and learn construction method of 6 x 8 kiln dried, milled, White Pine logs from local forests produced in Deer River, MN. Following this demonstration you will be well on your way to building your own cabin!

September 20 and 21 - Experience 'North House On the Road'
IRA CIVIC CENTER, Saturday and Sunday

The spirit, mission and vision of the North House Folk School have captured the imagination of many people, from Lake Superior’s North Shore to Greater Minnesota and far beyond. Traditional crafts of the northern hemisphere, combined with the stories and rich cultural history of its indigenous people, are the medium for providing creative and meaningful experiences for individuals, families and groups. In discovering the cultural heritage of the north, participants at North House integrate the technologies of the past with those of today, expanding their personal perspective and elucidating both the present and the future.

Visit the North House exhibit area to witness craft in process and see examples of projects learned in the classroom. Projects include Swedish-style wooden spoon carving, boatbuilding traditions of the north, north woods paddle making, pine needle basketry and more. A number of resourceful books that inspire the craftsperson will also be available for purchase.

You can begin on State Hwy 38, 3-1/2 mils south of Bigfork or 14 miles north of Grand Rapids, Minnesota Drive carefully along the paved and graveled roads and enjoy your tour of the Chippewa National Forest.
